Everyone needs a go-to easy and versatile dip recipe – and this is about to become yours! I’ve been making this chip dip for years, and anyone who tries it asks for the recipe. Let me show you how to make the best chip dip ever.

There’s something magical about the combination of a creamy, herbaceous dip with salty, savory chips. They balance each other out perfectly – crisp meets creamy, and it’s always a hit. What I love most about this chip dip is how unassuming it is. I’ve amused myself more than once by setting it out at a gathering and watching the reactions unfold.
The first person dips a chip, takes a bite, and immediately comments on how delicious it is. Then a second and third person try it, and before you know it, everyone’s crowding around the bowl, asking for the recipe. Even though it’s ridiculously easy to make, the fresh herbs and garlic flavor give it that extra something special that keeps everyone coming back for more.
This chip dip tastes better after letting it sit because the flavors have time to come together. The recipe instructions recommend letting it sit for at least 30 minutes before serving. If you’re having a party or planning to enjoy it on movie night or by the pool, prepare it the day before. Just make sure it’s stored in a covered container or a bowl covered tightly with wrap – I like to use these beeswax wraps.
Take this dip to the next level by serving it with my homemade potato chips!
Ingredients for the best easy chip dip
This recipe uses just a few ingredients you’re likely to have on hand. To make it, you’ll need:
- Sour cream + mayonnaise – this gives the dip deliciously creamy.
- Lemon juice – helps to brighten the flavor.
- Garlic + onion powder – adds a wonderful savory flavor. To get a little fancier, use finely minced garlic clove and some minced chive.
- Parsley + dill – we use the dried version because we always have them on hand, but fresh is nice too!
- Salt + pepper – just a little helps to bring out the flavor of the other ingredients.

Do you think this would last in the fridge if I make it 2 days in advance? I’ve made this twice! It’s my go to now! It’s so delicious 🤤 Trying to prep for Super Bowl party 😊
Oh yes absolutely it will last for 2 days. Have fun at your Super Bowl party!
I just made this dip for a party tomorrow, but l had to try it now of course lol. It’s so good, I was going to buy some but I’m glad I made it instead!
Haha, of course you had to try it first! 😄 I’m so glad you made it instead of buying it — that’s such a win. Hope it’s a hit at the party tomorrow, and thanks so much for leaving a note
Really very simple and good. Great way to use up sour cream!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! 😊 And yes — I love a recipe that puts that extra sour cream to good use. Thanks so much for leaving a note!
Thank you for this recipe. I was looking for an easy, delicious recipe to take the place of my favorite store bought one that is now using ingredients I don’t want to eat, and I don’t want that. This is now our favorite, and my husband said he likes it better than the store bought one! I will say that when I make it, I add extra dill, garlic powder, onion powder and parsley, but the thing that makes it the best is when I add a clove of fresh garlic along with the other ingredients, it gives it a little extra zip.
That makes me so happy to hear — thank you for sharing this! 😊 I love that it’s replaced your store-bought favorite (and that your husband likes it even better — that’s a big win). Extra dill and that fresh clove of garlic sound like such a great way to give it a little more zip. Thanks so much for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful note!
